    Default Hyper smooth gun

I was just wondering..... I have the hyper smooth gun, I just got it this past Christmas, If I powder coat a part and let it cool, should it let me place a second coat over the first with out having to hot flock it, lets say I have a super good ground "as I do " I have a 10' rod with a heavy copper wire going to my hanging rod, and the HS wire going to that, so lats say the KV's are set good and the ground is good and the part is clean good and the coating is not to heavy, etc etc
should this gun do it? because it will not, Now Brian from CC sent me a diagram as to mod the long tip to turn it into the multiple color tip, I did so, it was just a little better but not much...... so he told me to send him my purchase order and we can see what we can do.......

I took a clean test panel and powdered it aztec gold, did a full cure then then let it cool to room temp, then shot it with black, it would only take on about 40% of the panel, I turned the kv's down, I backed off, I changed tips, I turned the KV;s up "just to try it" I have taken my ground off and only used there ground etc etc etc

When I was buying the gun I saw a link of them coating 4 cold colors over one another, that's why I got it. I think My Harbor gun might be better.....I sure hope this is just a bum gun.

This all indicates a bad ground still. The only reason any of the second coats are so sketchy. Clean a good ground on the part, change hooks, all that kind of stuff. What kind of soil conditions do you have, and what material is your 10 foot rod made of?

how are you prepping the part for a second coat? So far, I have not read any of these second coat issues that are anything except bad guns, and/or bad grounds.

By the way,.... Do you have the diagrams You were sent, for Modifications to make a Multicoat nozzle from another nozzle? can you share them with folks please?

Scott, I am thinking the bad ground may be in the unit.... I do NOT want to take it apart for warranty reasons.
The ground (dirt) I have the rod in is Just reg old dirt, not sand or anything like that, The rod came from my sisters co, she owns an electric co. she had an employee put it in the ground, It was copper, then he hooked a big copper wire to it with a clamp and took this hammer gun or something? and finished putting it in the ground, He then made a hole in the garage and put the wire in the hole and ran it to my parts rod "copper also" so I clip the ground from the hyper smooth unit to the copper rod I hang parts on........

However, I have also tried to do without the rod that was installed and clip the ground wire to the part with still no luck.

I don't do anything to the part when I shoot a second coat as long as it's not dirty.....

Ok this is going to sound stupid, but to prove I have tried everything.... check this out, I put the KV's at 1/2 so I guess 50kv's now I held the part it my hand with NO ground and shot the part BUUUUZZZZZZZZZ!!! "I get zaped" as I think I am the ground? now if I hold the part and the ground wire from the unit then no ZAP ? Funny thing is after I do that about 20 times my mood enhances ?? JUST KIDDING
I know it sounds stupid but 1/2 you guys are going to go do it. LOL

I posted what I was sent but this site said I was only allowed 2 pic's so this in the link:

OK then,.... I do believe you have a good ground rod from the description, I'm kind of envious..... Mine's not quite so heavy duty, but is practical and standard. Is the ground rod not sticking out of the ground at all? I'd think you'd want the cable that is attached to it, to be "maintainable", accessible, and removable if needed. Min'e sticking out about 5 or 6 inches so I can add or remove wires at will.

The the gun should zap you when you don't have anything to address the charge. Holding the part and the ground , addresses this charge and effectively "drains it off" to ground. No zap. All is cool.

Have you tired shooting without the gun ground wire attached to the part or rack? I rarely use one anymore when i have a ground that I know is excellent. Earth Ground is the gold standard,... not gun-to-part ground.... Try that and see how things go.

Also, not trying to beat you down with too many things at once, but The humidity is a major player in this case also. Gotta have that magic humidity thing too. Somewhere around 50% RH is pretty fair.... Too high or Too low can both cause attraction issues.

It's good that you don't have to do anything to the part between coats too, as any wiping or blowing on the part, can induce a charge that causes the part to repel powder too..... Just hangin' and shootin' shouldn't be an issue at all.

On the modification link you sent, I don't have an account on CC's new can-O-worms,..... If you could Send me an email and I'll share with the world if you don't mind. I have both the guns, one from CC and one from PBTP, and both types of Multi coat nozzles,... so this is more about me being all nosey than anything,.... I just want to kno what kind of directions to follow to maybe make another one if I have other issues.... and don't have time to get one ordered before needed. Thanks

Have you tried changing your air flow? Not sure if it will help you out or not, but I know with my Caswell 50kv gun, I was having problems with multiple coats, similar to what you are describing, and after turning the air flow up a little, it actually seemed to help the adhesion quite a bit. Another thing that helped me was to charge the piece, spray some powder, then let off of the ground trigger and spray more powder. If I don't cycle it like that, it will usually not allow the powder to adhere to the edges of the piece very well.

I think I may have found my problem with my hyper smooth, when I bought the gun I was told it came with the multi nozzle free, so I thought the 6" nozzel with the wire sticking out was it..... (see on my name where it say's "newbie" well that's why ). I was on the phone talking with a very nice gentleman today for a good 1/2 hr or more. his name was Scott from PBTP. I did not even get the gun from him, yet he spent his time helping me with my issue.

He went through all the problems I was having, then He figured it out! I never got the multi nozzle !!! they do mods there for $175.00 to the hyper smooth, but he told me Just get the tip He was pretty sure that was my issue.
He could have sold me a mod to my unit for $175.00 but instead told me to buy a $25.00 nozzle. And PBTP did not even sell me the unit! I think I need to go spend money there so I feel better.

Thanks to you guys that tried to help me, I am posting this just in case someone else did not get the nozzle with there unit and don't know it.

When did you buy the gun? (Seeing noob, I assume recently) The Hyper Smooth Multi-coat Nozzle from PBTP is not the same as the one from CC. The one From CC is almost identical to the rest of the nozzles, with the exception of the electrode in the middle is not there,... and the tube from the bas of the nozzle is largely empty, save for the nozzle base and about a 2" electrode piece in the center (I'm pretty sure you have taken apart a nozzle by now right?) the rear-most piece of the multi-coat nozzle is about 2 inches long on my CC nozzle. and the tube is about 4 inches long, and the conical tip has the center hole plugged with what appears to be hot glue, and has a 3 winged back half, to hold it centered (which it doesn't de very well) in the tube. Using this nozzle, I can puch the conical piece in as far as I want to make the powder cloud broader and more robust.... It actually helps you control the cloud really well.

This picture shows the PBTP Multi on top, and the CC one on bottom. The conical tips for both are the same.... a tri-wing piece. Both pieces work well, but I think you already have the MC nozzle if you bought recently, unless CC has begun holding back on that now.....
