Default Powder wont stick where blasting guys missed few little areas! HELP!?

So I'm right in the middle of powder coating a set of aluminum 22" truck wheels gloss black. I have the entire wheel coated and there is a few spots, like in the lug nut holes, where the powder will not stick because there is still a little left over material that was not removed when they got blasted. The rims had powder coat on them previous to this coating that I had media blasted off by my guys but the new coating will not cover over?? Is there a way to get the new black powder to cover the little spots that were missed when blasting?

Sorry to hear about your troubles! I know what you mean as we see that happen in our facility every so often.

I would suggest a couple options: One, you can manually remove what the media blasters missed. You could use a knife, scraper, or some other tool to remove any left over coating. That may be difficult but worth it if you can expose the underlying metal.

Another option that has proven successful for me in the past is to lower your kv down really low and/or pull your gun farther from the part and you may see that the powder will cover even over the areas that have leftover coatings.

Let us know if you find a good solution.

You could also heat up the wheel to 180 degrees and hot flock those holes, or you could just blow off the wheel and reblast. If you reblast there is not a worry about that previous coating comming off and taking your new coating with it.

I would sandblast the areas that have prior powder on them. You dont want your finish to flake off due to bad prep. But.........yeah...JayDee said it good. You can hot flock those areas if you wanted to.

The biggest problem with trying to remove it after already coating the wheel is scraping it off and maybe getting it in the powder. Then again if it comes loose under your powder, your powder will come off in that spot. I've run into the same issue with my guy and took them back to him to finish. That's why I'm building a bigger blaster for myself. But if you want to go ahead with it, follow the suggestions and put it in the oven until it starts to flow, pull it, shoot those spots and put er back in for full cure. Keep that little trick in the back of your mind as it will come in handy down the road for Faraday places.

    Re-blast

Do the extra labor now instead of down the road if the coat flakes or peels off from that area!!
