Need help with Iron Phosphate wash

Hello Crew,

My questions are this:

Can someone give me a few suggestions on the iron phosphate process.
I want to do this to a steel frame prior to powder coating. Are there
any low temp phosphate solutions ( I would spray it on ) just for powder coating out on the market and where can I buy them ? ( Names, web sight or phone number )

How about two stage phosphate wash, Coat and D.I. rinse ?

Is de-ionized water as good, not as good or better than distilled water to use as a rinse?

I went to the local Sherwin - Williams paint store and told them what I wanted to do. I was sold a product made by Jasco. Its their Prep and Primer that leaves behind a iron phosphate finish. This appears to be a no - rinse solution ( I tried doing a light D.I. water rinse and the part flash rusted in ten min. ) and I don't know if this product can be used for powder coating. Seems the sales people at the store didn't have the answers I needed to my questions.
What would some of you guys and gals do if you wanted to prep
( iron phosphate ) a steel frame prior to powder coating ?
I have been using Eastwood products for the past two years and the item had to be bare clean metal to powder coat. The item will still be bare clean metal to start the iron phosphate phase. This is a new process for me, and with your help, I would like to get it right.

I built my own heated phosphate tank. It was pretty easy to build because it's small. A large one would be a bit more difficult. I used a product called BSP 245. It's ok, but requires a temp of 90 to 140f, and is kind of expensive due to the amounts you have to buy. If you intend to spray it I would use a small garden sprayer and heat the solution up in a pot, pour it in the sprayer and spray the frames. You do not need to rinse afterward. You can buy smaller amounts and it's less expensive.

Can you give me any more info on the aspho wash from Ace Hardware?
I tried finding it on their web sight but had no luck. We do have a Ace Hardware store in town, if I can get a little more info. I can be specific when talking to the salesman.

I would like to hear from the people that have used Caswell's iron phosphate wash. I got mine in a few days ago and gave it a shot.
It was not what I expected. Yes, it turned the metal a grayish color with a white powder residue kind of on top , but I still had a problem with light flash rust at the weld joints. I mixed the solution according to the directions - 4 oz. of solution to 1 gal. of distilled water. Then I sprayed the frame down good with a spray washer for 5 min. with the solution heated at 140 deg. After that it was air dried with a fan.

Anybody else have any experience with this product ?

you should be able to just ask for it, it will be in there paint section probably right next to the muratic acid...btw..I powder coated my boat trailer 3 years ago and I used ospho on it after it was sand blasted and the pc hasnt failed yet on it.

Thanks for the info on the Ospho wash. I had a chance to use it over the weekend and it looks great. The finish turned out just like you told me it would and I really liked the ease of use. You are a guru !
