Yes you must break the engine down, no internal parts at all..

Jim,

Do you plan to run open exhaust to quieten that motor down? It looks bright enough to emit light from under the hood. I know it's a theft deterent.

Besides the extral length it take to properly cure the massive metal involved on motors, its just as important to remember that the painting portion is only have of the equasion. Your product is only as good as it's pretreatment. If you skimp here, your finish coat will suffer to most standard powder testing. Also, remember that if your painting over aluminum and going to use a chemical to clean it, aluminum will NOT accept a phosphate coating. Phosphate are primarily used in acidic type baths. I would suggest you use a good akaline bath. When you expose your aluminum to alaline, you will see a rapid reaction take place as the top layer of aluminum is eaten away. You will only need to leave it in for a very few seconds or smutting (blackening) will occur. You can paint over light smut, but the performance of your topcoat will not be a strong as if you took your part out prior to this. The degree of smutting will also depend upon your quality of aluminum. Good quality aluminum will look bright and clean when done tis way. Try it sometime. Make sure you rinse the part immediately afterwards so the alkaline stop reacting to your aluminum. Also, your water quality plays a huge part on the topcoat performance. If you have water that has a high degree of total dissolved solids (water hardness) in it, thats will remain on your part. You may not see it, be the paint does.
