Small Business

Hey guys, while powder coating with my toaster oven lately, I noticed that my options are very limited, so a friend of mine had a talk, he has a shop, and we think it would be very worth while to have a small powder business going, not really an actual business right now, but more of a hobby type thing, I am only 17, but I realize there are many opportunities for powder coating, I love doing it, and I think it's the best way of painting around. The only business on the island that does powder coating is a descent sized business, but seeing as it's the only one, their prices are probably high since they have no competition, What we are thinking though, is just something to do in our spare time, in a year I will be taking welding in college, and I think powder coating also would be a perfect combo for a company in the future, I do have plans, but for the next couple years, a friend and I are just planning to coat projects for people that want it done for a very reasonable price. Right now I have a couple people lined up just to paint brake rotors, (all I've done in my toaster oven) and have received many people interested, if I could do bigger projects etc, I know there would be a lot of interest, which I am glad to see, we will be putting some more money into a nice oven, and setup in the shop, and will buy the powder for now as necessary, (plus a few other common colors) and go from there, each new project we will have extra powder, and also some more cash in out hands, I have always been picky on quality jobs, so there will always be time put into our work, I am always learning of course (as in all subjects) who doesn't? and at the moment all I see are good opportunities, this should be great, it will also be a good foundation to build on, and have fun with, I will keep you all updated, and any suggestions are always appreciated, I am glad there is a forum like this around with some great guys, I have learned a lot, and plan to go just a little further with my hobbies.

Yea, keep us updated, From what Chuck says and many others, it's a good business to get into.

you can make a ton of money and trust me you will be happy you got in to it..

If i take the time and effort, i see that there could be some nice buisness, i have a small toaster oven, and i painted a disk rotor, i then put it on a bike website, and had lots of people interested, hopefully i have an oven soon, and will be able to do most of the stuff i want to, eg: frames or rims (cars or bike) and by the looks of things, i think i would get a few people interested in just anything they want painted. I'm waiting to place another order with Caswell to get a few more colours, and more tape, just waiting for Caswell to response to my free powder, so they can just include it with my order I will keep you all updated, i'm comming up with idea's all the time, it's great to learn more and more everyday about something you're interested in, thanks alot,

Today while working on painting the 1 ton truck at my grandma's i was looking around for a couple tools; My grandfather passed away a couple years ago, and most of his stuff was passed to my uncle, and just a few basic tools are around, so i thought i would try the back of the motorhome shed, i have seen a water pump, and a couple other small machines back there, when all of the sudden it dawned on me, a ray of light seemed to be hovering over this dusty and dirty Kerosene heater, haha, i was pretty happy when i saw it, my father was up there at the time, and told me that it was his/my uncles, and that no-one would be missing it, it hasn't been used for quite some time now. So finally i have an oven opportunity, my dad thinks this is a good plan, instead of tearing apart an oven to make it bigger.
So now im in the market to make an oven, i was thinking a 3foot X 4foot box, and about 3 feet high, i have seen all the posts on here (thanks alot) and have figured out how i will do a basic rig up, following Chucks oven. I am planning on making it out of cement board etc, and was originally going to seal it, until i saw Chucks basic oven, If everyone could pool together their pro's and cons of their ovens that they have made that would be great, I'm not really wanting to find out how to make it better after the fact, i would much rather like to do it all at once. The cheaper the better of course, but i also want it to be of nice quality, so cost isn't a big issue, but you know :P i would like to have more powder around.

welll had something called slack time,,took all them old parts that were layin around the shop, cleaned em up and powdercoated em to my liking tookem to the local flea mart and not only made some mad money but made some goooood buis contacts....

I see a lot of talk about doing this as a small business. What I am wondering is what is being charged to PC items? Maybe as an example what would you charge to PC an intake manifold or something smaller like bolt heads? Just trying to get a handle on what the going price is to have this done... thanks!

what i found is 2 companies with published pricelist on the web, Sumax and Prism Powdercoating. go there and download their prices and adjust accordingly. be sure you are sitting down when you look at the prices. keep in mind though that sumax is the powder shop orange county chopper uses and they stand behind their work well.

I charge $45.00 for a preped big block intake.
I did some marine headers four of them and charged $500.00 which I did have to prep and cut off some brackets.
