powdercoating over factory powdercoating

Bear with me as I am new to PC I am looking to powdercoat aluminum wheels that came from the factory with with a silver podercoat and clear coat. Can I powdercoat over this or do I need to strip everything off or maybe just the clear coat. If I just need to take off the clear coat, how do I do that? I have a large blast cabinet if that helps. Thanks in advance.

To get the best results always go back to bare metal.
If you have the cabnet to blast then go for it...

The cabinet will never strip that off. I have tried will alum oxide and the wheel laughed I stipped one with aircraft stripper but that was way too much work. The rim that I stripped was already powdercoated black (by someone else) over the factory powdercoating and clear coat. It seemed to have very good adhesion and good finish.

Here is how I do it.
1 Use Stripper ( cover with plastic wrap).
2 Scape off what you can..
3 Use Stripper again same as #1
4 rinse parts.
5 Sand Blast with slag med..

I will never Powder over some one else work, as you have no idea of the base coat..
This is how I do it and I have never had a part fail...
This is my advise you can use it or not...

thank you. I will try the plastic wrap. The stripper is not working to it's full potential beacause of the cold temps in the garage. The only reason that I would consider trying to coat over the existing finish is because it is a factory finish.

Just so you know there are 2 types of Air Craft Stripper ( I like that word ) )
The first 1 is Air Craft Remover,
the other is Air Craft Remover Low Odor the 2nd does not work worth a darn.

Thanks for the tip. The stuff that I have is the low odor. Any idea where I can get the other one?

you might be able to find it at the same place you got the low oder. just ask for the regular aircraft stripper. if not try auto parts stores or auto paint supply stores

I purchase mine from and Auto Body Supply store..
Something like 25 a gallon..
Wear a mask or make sure you have plenty of ventilation!!!!!!
Stuff will knock you over... lol...
