I bought the phosphate solution from caswell and I just wanted to know the best way to use it. After diluting with distilled water, and soaking the part in the phosphate, is it necessary to rinse off the part or just dry it? Also, when I did some parts when I pulled them out the the solution and was getting ready to dry them, some faint yellowish color appeared on the parts. Is this flash rust or is it the phosphate coating? I read that phosphates will attack any surface rust left on the surface. Is this true?
Thanks, Ross |

You need to rinse briefly with either DI or Distilled water. A minute or two. I follow up the rinse by drying with hot air (I use a 1000W heat gun). You don't want to get the part extremely hot, just get it good and dry asap. Do not handle the part with your hands after treating. In fact, if you can hang the part from a piece of wire you should treat it with the Iron Phosphate solution, rinse it, dry it, then go right to paint or powdercoat without taking it off the wire. If you absolutely must pick up the part wear latex or nitrile gloves. Personally, I never touch anything once I treat the part until the paint or powdercoat finish is applied and cured.
