I don't think WD-40 is the stuff to use, as it may make the rubber ring expand until the solvent dries out. Try a spray silicone on the O Ring and fitting.

PERMATEX® Silicone Spray Lubricant
Permatex® Silicone Spray Lubricant, Lubricates and waterproofs all types of mechanical equipment. Stops friction and squeaks; coats hinges and channels. Prevents locks, doors and windows from binding. High silicone formula does not attract dust or dirt.

Suggested Applications:
Lubricates door locks, trunk lids, brake cables and rubber molding.

Popeye.

I'm not suggesting you spray the silicone all over the place, just treat the plunger and the O Ring. It's got to be better than WD-40 which can damage the O Ring with the solvent. The silicone won't collect dust either, unlike the oil.

If you are messy and slather the silicone everywhere, then yes, you'll get fisheyes in the paint finish.

Mike,
I can't even bring a can of silicone in the building without getting fish eyes.
I am a very neat person by the way

You can add more desiccant packets (moisture removers) to you cans of powder and or cups of powder.
They are very cheap on ebay, about $8.00 for 50 packs, including shipping.
They work very well for keeping powder dry.
