Default Can you figure out what I did wrong?

Her is the pciture. It is Liquid Smoke over Super Chrome on an aluminum pipe used for an air intake. My prep and spray process was as follows:
-Cleaned the part with paint thinner
-Sandblasted, cleaned with paint thinner again, then cleaned with wax abnd grease remover.
-Outgassed in over for 20 minutes at 425 degrees.
-Let part cool. Hit it with air to remove any dust particals.
-Sprayed with Super Chrome. Ovened for 20 minutes at 400 deg. (the part looked just perfect after this)
-Let cool to about 150 degrees, and sprayed with Liquid Smoke.
-Ovened for about 20 minutes at 400 degrees.
-Came out finished as shown.

Now I havwe done this exact process before, and uyeilded perfect results.
What did I do wrong this time?
Thanks!

By any chance did you simply wipe the wax/grease remove over the part with a cloth, instead of spraying it on?

I have tried paint thinner for part cleaning, and the results were awful. It was as if the paint thinner left oil behind that showed up during the cure. If you cleaned the part with thinner, then wiped it down with wax/grease remover, it wouldn't clean the paint thinner residue out of the pores and you'd probably see something like what your picture shows.

I stopped using paint thinner because I could never be sure I had gotten it completely flushed out of the pores of the metal.

Not sure if that's the problem, just a wild guess

Steve

Your results look like a set of stands I did a few months back. My problem turned out to be spraying a different powder formula over the base coat.

TGIC vs Epoxy

I did use a cloth, and I have always done it this way. Perhaps I should try not using paibnt thinner and using a spray was/grease remover. Thanks for the suggestion! If anything, it couldn't make things any worse!

cruizer,
First why are you using a Gease/wax remover? You did say you are outgasing correct? if so just use Acetone as a wipe on or from a spray bottle.
The less you put on after it has been Outgassed the better.
Steps:
Sandblast, Spray with cleaner, outgas, cool then powder..

I have found that everyone uses so many different chemicals, it's hard to compare notes when something goes wrong.
Brake fluid, acetone, alchohol and a long list of others are some that are being used by PC'ers here on the forum.
Doesn't anyone just use the phosphate cleaners

I did the same thing over an intake pipe a while back. I sandblasted, prepped with iron phosphate, outgassed at 8 minutes, shot the chrome, baked at 400* for 10 minutes, shot the liquid smoke at around 180*, cured at 400* for 20 minutes. Came out flawless.

I have had the same problems with chrome over thin metal like the intake pipe, valve covers and a bike fender. I have seen it with both super chrome and xtreme chrome. On thinner substrates I have started putting on two coats of chrome and have had no more problems. I put the second coat on right after the full cure of the first coat. Just be careful and dont lay the second coat on too thick.
