Default Yet another newbie question...

All,
Can powder coating truly be done in a toaster oven for small parts, or an old electric kitchen oven in your garage? If so, why are ovens that say they're for powder coating at about the same size as a regular oven, running for prices in the thousands $$$ ? What are the advantages that makes them so expensive?

Thanks,
Woody

Do you think i could use my Ron Popeil "set it and forget it" rotesserie oven, or would one of these work?

Yup. Any one of those those would work. Your only limitation would be how big an item you can fit inside. (Asuming it can get to 400 deg and a bit for good measure).

If you look hard enough, you can likly find one for free. I have 2 ovens, both were freebies. Both times the people were begging me to haul them off, both work great.

I saw one sitting in a ladies yard and just stopped and ask if she wanted to sell it. The other I picked it up at a yard sell...

to answer this question you need to ask why does it cost twice as much for some items that are made specific for say a hospital as they would for anywhere else. it has to do with the testing to get them certified for that application. also most "powder coat curing ovens" will have a fast heat up time. you can surely use any oven that is capable of getting to and maintaining the temp need to cure the parts. i have 3 different oven that i use. one like the linked one you posted also a house oven and then my "big" oven that i can do up to motorcycle frames in. as long as they are dedicated to doing the powder work only and not used for cooking after coating then any one that will get the job done is fine.

Sweet! That's why i come here, the great help. Unfortunately, I'll have wait on a regular kitchen oven...finding one is not the problem, but I don't have any more 220 circuits open, and nothing run to the garage. I guess i'll have to create a sub-panel out there, but can't afford that run yet. Time to tell my wife that her days of rotessierie chicken are over...

Thanks!

Woody
