Default want educated on caswells new gun

hi all
i have a hobby gun. i have done a couple of 1 coat jobs with it with no problems. i am going to get into the 2 & 3 coat jobs and am wondering if the inexpensive gun will work for this. i am guessing that it will not. i see a lot of talk about the kw of guns. i do not know what the kw is about. sounds like the more kw a gun supplies the better powder transfer you get. will the $90.00 gun that i have work for 2 & 3 coat applications, or would i help myself to upgrade to caswells new gun. could someone explain the kw of a gun.
thanks again
ron

kw is the kilowatts of high frequency electricity that the gun produces. like a static spark. the higher the gun the more charge it will impart to the powder. as for what is better i cant say as i still use a competitors so called pro gun that only puts out about 25kv and the hobby gun you have is rated at 16kv. i have issues with multi layer coating as well. i think the key is as always said prep is important when shooting the second coat a good ground will help lots but if the power is not enough to go through the first coat(powdercoating is an insulator by the way) then you may have issue with the second coat sticking/clinging. the cheat for this is to heat the part up to about 100-150 degrees and then shoot the second coat. if you shoot at full temp as i and many have done then you risk getting sags and uneven coats. also if you make a mistake it is set and cant be fixed easily. i know this since i am in the process of stripping a chopper frame that i screwed up by hot shooting.

I just jot done doing a 2 coat on a ste of 18" rims. The new gun worked very well! Both coats were shot cold. I had it set on 50kv for both coats. Looks like my nordson will be get alot less use!!

That is what I wanted to hear! I just got my gun (first time ever coating) and once I get good I am going to do my truck rims. I can't wait!

so your experience with the caswell gun was that it worked much better than a hobby gun that only has 16kv when applying two coats? i know the other people on here know what there doing and i am not questioning what they say. i just want all the feedback i can get so i can decide what will work best for me. so there was no problem with the powder being drawn to the part on the second coat and it was easy to tell how much you applied with the second coat??
thanks

Yes, It works 10 times better than a hobby gun, as far a charging the powder. It still has it's limits though, being based on a hobby gun. I've learned over the years to adjust for the inconsistent flow of powder from the hobby gun. Even with a "custom" nordson 100, I'll grab my hobby gun first as I can change colors 20 times in a normal day.

I'm working on a small hopper for the new hobby gun, if it works like I hope there will be a nordson for sale(Well that may be pushing it!!)
