Thread: Powder coating motorcycle eng.

  1. #1

    Question Powder coating motorcycle eng.

I just removed and cleaned the engine and trans. I wanted to powder coat it glossy red.
    1. do I need to remove all the old powder coat?
    2. can I get a smooth look even if the eng and trans aluminum is not smooth?
If I need to smooth the eng. and trans. what would be the quickest / easiest way?
    Thanks

ALL the old coatings need to be taken off, Media blasting is the best for acheving a uniform, smooth finish with great adhesion. You need to COMPLETELY tear the engine apart too. No seals, bearing's, nothin that cant handle 400*

yes that should work if it is a medium to fine grit. that is what i use on aluminum all the time. again like bandit said it has to be fully disassembled and degreased. then blast and prep, powder away. by full disassembled i mean the main bearing races as well, otherwise they can losen in the cure process and then after reassembly they will spin and destroy your crank.
when in doubt polish it out/ why replace it when you can refinish it

i agree with pickleboy, also if your transmission case is very rough you can sand it down wth 100 or 120 grit to remove all sharp edges and casting marks before blasting to get an even smoother finish
for special show bikes i sometimes polish parts to almost mirror finish before painting and then wetsand and buff the paint
but that is the high end limit, not all customers want to pay for that
