Default need help with two tone job on harley wheel

i have two colors from two different suppliers that i am going to put on a harley wheel. outer wheel is to be a silver and inner wheel is to be a violet. i failed at first attempt. wrong color of violet. had to strip wheel and start all over. i really want to get it right this time. my dilema is would it be adviseable to do whole wheel in silver and fully cure then mask for violet. i had a difficult time masking the wheel first time for both colors and think it would be much easier to shoot it all one color first then only mask one time for second color. also should i sand first coat where second coat will be going or is it safe to apply second coat directly on top of fully cured non prepped first coat. any help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks all
ron

Is the violet color just a base that will need to be clear coated or is it a one coat color ?

violet is a one coat color as is the silver. not intending to apply a clear over colors. my first attempt, besides having the wrong color of violet, who coats there bike wheels violet anyways, i masked off where the silver goes on the outer portion of wheel. sprayed violet on inner portion of wheel and fully cured. then masked off the inner wheel where i coated violet and sprayed silver and cured. end result was high temp tape buckled on radius of wheel and allowed silver to flow onto the violet. not pretty. am now thinking to coat whole thing silver, do a full cure, and then mask for the violet eliminating one masking step, the one where the tape buckles. silver and violet are from two different suppliers, had to do this cause first violet was to far off and they did not have any other colors that would work. my consern is laying violet over silver and not knowing the manufacturer of either powder, have read on posts that its a potential problem to do this.. also am wondering about the need to sand the silver to give the violet a surface to hold to. some people just coat over other colors without doing anything to first coat. am confused on this one. if its a partial cure i can understand that but over a full cure
thanks for taking the time to help with this it is really appreciated!!!!!!!!

With everything i powder coat weather its a base coat/top coat/clear.
or a chrome/candy color , i always fully cure each coat. i also almost always shoot base and top coats hot. 125-160-deg.

With fresh baked powder there's no need to sand for a second/top coat, just shoot it hot and you wont have a problem.

You can shoot the silver then fully cure, let cool then mask . Heat back up to 150-deg the shoot the violet. Just make sure the violet doesnt change color with the silver as the base.

As far as masking i had that problem on my first Two tone wheel . So what i do now is mask off with a good 3m/type auto masking tape . Then with my oven up to temp put the wheel in the oven for 3-5 minutes for the color to start to flow out , then remove wheel . let it cool down alittle and carefully remove the masking tape. lets me end up with good smooth lines between the colors.

For my Two tone wheels masking this way is alittle more work for me , but its better then having to strip it down and redo it again.

The black chrome/trans red wheels i did, pics in the gallery were real fun .
Basically it was a 4 part color wheel. 1.black chrome center 2. clear black chrome 3. chrome lips 4. Trans red lips

And basically had to remask each wheel 4 times.... it sucked...lol

RNMHRD i thank you for your help!!!!!!!!! i will try as you said. got to turn out better. as you said i too hope the silver doesnt change the violet too much. i am 6 months into powder coating and have learned a lot and have much more to learn. this forum and all the people that make it happen is a great thing!!!!!!!!. i just learned the hard way today that if blasting parts and then doing a conversion coat next will really make parts look pretty with flash rust. had to re blast parts. have had reps from PPG at my shop and they was supposed to help with fine tuning my operation. they sold me on different processes and chemicals and my first try with it was a flop. i called them and then they told me what will happen if i am blasting first. live and learn.
thanks again
ron
