Hey guys.... New to the forum, been lurking for a few months, learning as much as I can.... anyway I'm real fustrated and need some help/advice on stripping a part...

I've been trying to strip the factory coating from the top triple clamp on my motorcycle (Honda) and am at wits end. I've used Aircraft Stripper from Autozone, Citrastrip from H/D, Eastwood Paint and Powdercoat Remover (took a very slight amount of tint off the coating... in 2 days of soaking), and just tried some nasty smelling "Zip-Strip" and still the coating is there. I was able to get through the coating to the aluminum using a wire wheel on my bench grinder, which wouldn't be too bad for the top side, but the underside would be a bit of a pain, there are some real tight areas, and I'm ticked at the fact I'm 4 products in the hole cash wise and still have nothing to show for it.

Aside from wire wheeling it, or taking it to get blasted (which is probably the best way, I know).... has anyone stripped (chemically) a stock Honda triple (black color) form a recent sportbike (CBR/RC51/VTR/etc)? And if so, what did you use. Im tempted to try the "naked" Gun Cleaner, mentioned in this thread, but if that didn't work my head might explode!!!!

Thanks for any help in advance.

J.

Exclamation Re: Stripper - New Product!?

Okay, after reading the posts about the stripping of powder coat, I did some searching. First off I found the Kleanstrip locally. But after talking to a young lady about this cleaner, she told me of a stripper that they have just gotten in within the last month or so and that I should give it a try. So, I will get some today and report back on it. She claims that the demo that she seen, was absolutely awesome to see. According to her, it just lifts powder right of of the item coated. It's a bit pricey, but if it will do what most can't, I game. One of the major differences is that it is NOT harmful to you or your skin and IS biodegradable. Says that they have been selling quit a bit of it.

I will report on this, hopefully tonight after I get it and test it, as I have a tank that refuses to come completely clean, even with the Aircraft stripper. So, stayed tuned.

Okay, didn't get the stripper going until later today. Well that's not totally true. I did put some on it. But like a lot of us and the guy thing, I didn't RTFB. I didn't stir it up before using. And I only applied it to a small area. Anyway, on that spot it lifted of in on piece, so wonder what will happen now that I have read the instructions on the container.

I put it on, but was busy working on my oven and doing a small powder job, so didn't get back to it. Will check it in the morning. They said I could leave it over night and it would still be good in the morning. That part is true.

Stay tuned. I will have a report tomorrow sometime.

Hey,I've gotten alot of info from all of you maybe now I can give some back.I coated and cleared a swingarm but decided to change the color,I bought a can of Kleen-strip(you have to get the GOLD can)and it took off everything, just shook it up,poured some on the part and spresd it around with a brush, first the clear came off and then the regular powder,it took less then one hour!Hope this helps.

Man I guess I dropped the ball on this thread.
As for the Kleen Strip (not the gold) I don't think it hold up. Don't use it. But here is what I have found out about alot of strippers. If it contains methylene chloride , it will remove powder. You can buy it by itself or in a product. DO NOT get it on you, it burns like hell. I found it in Permatex Gasket Remover (spray) and it works real well. I also found that a product called ZINNER is a pretty good one. It comes in several strengths from removing 2 coats to 5 coats. It's called "Fast Strip, Power Stripper", red can with photo's of the process on it. Can't remember the cost, I think around $23.

As for the Sovent Kleene D-solve 1012, that stuff is REAL good. It's ECO friendly and cost around $200.00 for 5 gal. I think you have to have a Company name to get it. There is also another one, that I have not tried, but heard some feedback on it that is from Powder Buy The Pound called BIODEGRADABLE PAINT STRIPPER-C8544 @ $159.99 for 5 gal.
Check that out.

I'm currently stripping a pair of wheels that didn't come out to good (Mirror Black) and am using the Permatex. All of the paste strippers ARE labor intensive. The 1012 and C8544 are not, but then you only get 5 gallons.

So for my delay in answering this thread a long time ago, this is my findings.

Hope this helps with some of the not wanted stripping.
