Acid. Muriatic or battery acid.

Thanks, I was kind of hoping it was something I had around here, but it's only money right?

If your parts are small enough, vinegar will take it off, but it's a lot slower, since it's a weak acid, and dilute.

Muriatic is not expensive, can be further diluted, and goes a long way.

What I'm making is a catch pan for my horizontal saw. When I use coolant in conjunction with cutting to keep the blade cooler and cleaner, it always a mess to try and catch it all. I have some tin that will work for a catch pan but it's galvanized . It's only about 2 ft by 18 inches. So it not what I'd consider big. That Muriatic is what they use on bricks I think, I have vinegar but I don't know how slow is slow. thanks.

What's wrong with that? The galvanizing will keep it rust-free for years.

Your actually absolutely right. I was just to try to match it to the rest of the saws color. The other reason was I didn't want to rivet the corners so I was going to weld them and that would make it ugly anyway. The applications I want to use it for is electrical box covers, compressor pressure switches (home made) Boxes that hold other various components, so this is not a isolated application. Thanks for the heads up though.

Welding it certainly has safety issues.

As for matching color, it can be painted. Just wipe it down w/vinegar, rinse, dry & paint.

Are we talking power coat type paint? That's good news if so.

Either powder coat or paint.

Any plain zinc surface will oxidize. You just need to remove the oxides & reactivate the zinc.

Wipe the part w/mild acid solution (vinegar, 5-10% muriatic), rinse , dry & paint immediately.
