Default better taping way

I powder coated these heads and I also polished the edges.
I first polished the edges and then taped the edges (whichwas a pain in the ass ) then I pwder coated them, after it cool down I removed the tape and found that the powder got in some area I taped I had to repolish the edges and when I ran the buffing wheel to close and hit the coated areas it turned black ( Iguess from burning it ) the picture is not to good. I am really anal and dont like to see any pwder where it should be. any Idea on how to do this better?

I think what I am going to try is to shoot powder on the whole thing, then before I cure I will wipe the power of the edges of the fins. What do you guys think? Will that work? No taping at all.

that's the way i do it
powder it and before curing
clean up the edges with your fingers or with a Q-tip
has never failed and I've done like 10 this way.

Yup. That's how I do it too. You can also use one of those cheap foam paint brushes to make it easier. I've also used a scotch pad to rub off the power on the edges afterward. They make em for a drill or wheel and that speeds it up. Both work pretty well.

Here's a head I just did, using the Rol-Loc surfacing pads in an air grinder. The Rol-loc's take off the powder pretty easily.

Ok, so now the whole thing is power coated, the fins have been cleaned, can I then shoot clear on top of the cleaned fins and original power coat. Will the bear metal turn a color because of heating the item again?

Aluminum, no. Harley cyl's are alum. Now steel, I dunno? Never cleared bare steel. Good Q though. I do have some low temp clear, 340* cure temp. Got it from EW.
