Default Cerakote burning/flaking off??

I have had 2 items returned now due to Cerakote burning and flaking off. I know they were not exceeding temp. WHen I got my quart of cerakote, teh particles were a solid mass in the bottom. I had to take a drill with a paint mixer and mix the **** outa it. I know it has a 6 month shelf life. I sprayed the first part the day I got the Cerekote. Could it be to old from sitting on Caswell Canada's shelve's Either way, I am not impressed, got to redo both pieces now.

what is the process you are ussing ? are you ussing chromex ?
most problems with ceramic coating is due to bad prep

cerakote chromex is a very hard surface that shouldn't happend
colors only work good till around 800 so they won't work for hearders

It's normal for their to be a solid mass at the bottom. It arrives that way fresh from the factory. The product has a 6 month shelf life, but we (and Caswell Canada) sell a ton of it. It doesn't sit on our shelves for more than a few weeks.

Can you expand on your prep?

Process was exactly as described on your site.

Blast surface
Pre-bake at 450 for 30 min to evaporate any oils, moisture
Spray cold
Let air dry fro 20 min
Back in oven, 250* approx for 20 min to finish drying coating
Then turn oven up to 525 a,d bake for an hr once it's at temp

It's cerakote Chromex. not the colored stuff.

Hey Bandit,

What did you use to blast the parts? Were they new or used parts?

I ask this because I had the same problem with a manifold I shot for one of my best customers. There was no burning, but it did flake off. I came to find out that he glass beaded the manifold. I used the same batch of chrome to do a set of headers that I cleaned myself with aluminum oxide and had no problems. Also if the parts are used and not properly cleaned on the inside you could run into problems with the coating lifting. What were the parts? One other problem I ran into was coating a pair of aluminized headers. The original coating prevented the ceramic from adhering to the pipes and the new coating just cracked and fell off . It took a while to figure out why but eventually I found it and corrected the problem.

The parts were steel, used. But blasted with Silica sand. It's all my blaster uses. He has a back of a 5 ton truck as his blast room. Recycles the sand. I didn't coat the inside, just outside of the pipes. I have one pipe here that I am doing, I soaked it in Muriatic acid, and coated the inside too. But it's fpr a dirtbike, adn won't know the long term results till spring
