I just read a bit on the dupont website. They have a process for coating wood. Don't know much about it, but it's right there in plain english...

The wood coating seems to be limited to MDF for the most part, but with certain surface treatments, it aslo seems to be do-able on most woods. Probably pricey too.

I know that's not what you were looking for, but I think it looks kinda cool.
