Default first attempt horror stories

hey guys,
i was just thinking back to some of my first pieces and how everything seemed to go wrong. i was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences that made them learn a thing or two. i can tell you i learned that something sturdy to hand from in your oven is worth it's weight in gold lol

Hey Scones! To be honest I did so much reading on these forums I have had nothing but perfect parts so far. I have done quite a bit also. Intakes, Valve covers you name it. Iblast all parts, clean them good and most important is prebake at 400 until the part stops smoking! From there I played around with the gun and got used to the way it acts. I found life easier when I removed the defuser tip.

I dropped a block-off plate I was just laying my third coat on, spraying hot, in the bottom of the oven the other day. That sucked, had to strip and start all over again.

Early on I cleaned a part with regular cheap paint thinner. That was a big mistake, because it left something on the metal that really screwed up the finish. I guess it was some oily film. Or something

anyone ever have problems with polished metals? i'm working on this one piece that had been polished up to a mirror shine and man i can't get it to stop out gassing. tried every trick i know. i'm guessing the polishing compound she used really penetrated into the metal and is coming out.

this is what i do most, polishing itself is not the problem but cleaning the polished part is very important ,also sheap castings are very porous so it could cause problems even if not polished,
heres how i prep a polished part
after polishing i clean with regular thinner then i clean in very hot water with mild soap (make sure you are using a soap tht does not affect the polishing)
rinse with very hot water , dry then outgas for about 40 minutes at 390
let cool then clean with acetone and then paint

You mean like the outgassing on this potmetal trash. 1 pic (WTF) is the outgasssing, the other is the 2nd attempt.

Nope, left them on. Owner of the parts wasn't concerned if I burned them off.
They actually held up pretty well.
