Default New 50 KV gun: how does it compare to the old gun?

I may be in the market for a new gun. I was wondering how the new Caswell 50 KV hobby gun compares to the old one as far as ease of applying second coats, etc. Has anyone had a chance to make a good comparison? Does it really make that much difference?

I had both. The guns are both the same quality wise........

As far as the extra voltage I find that when I crank it to 50KV I cant go anywhere near the part and it starts buzzing and sparking! The non high voltage gun was 14KV which IMO is plenty.

My high voltage gun... The center steeel thingy slides around on the shaft, and where the cup is glued to the gun the glue is seperated and the built on cup base blows powder out between the two. I have to find some time to epoxy it together. The gun came out of the box like this. To be honest I was think of opening up my high voltage gun box and seing if there is a way I can add a switch so I can lower the voltage. Even the lowest setting is too high at time when trying to get powder to fall into tight places.

Wow, did you talk to Caswell about any of this, and were they able to help?

These are common problems w/the hobby gun. You get what you pay for.

The "steel thingy" can be unthreaded off the center rod. Put a slight bend in the center rod where the "thingy" normally sits. Put the "thingy" back on. Spring tension from the bend will not hold it in snug.

My cap is also loose, but not to the point where powder escapes. If/when it does, it will need re-gluing. Hold the cap, not the gun, when you screw the cup on.

This is expected and I do not mind working the gun a bit. There is no point returning the gun cause the next gun will likely have a different problem. Somebody needs to make a good quality gun for like $500. I would buy one if it was quality. Heck, the controller on the 50KV gun is great, just the handle sucks.

I know what you mean.

I'll still really interested in whether anyone noticed if it made much of a difference in second coats, etc. Was it what you expected?

Hmmm, well I made a typo above, but can't edit my own post:

That should have said: "Spring tension from the bend WILL hold it in snug."

I notice it does cling more on second coats but like mentioned I turn mine down to its lowest setting or it sparks like a mofo.

How close are you holding the gun form the work? Sparks usually only happen at 1 inch and closer. You should be 6-8" away from your work

Honestly, If I have it at 50KV is starts buzzing and sparking between the part and the rack it's on from 12" away!
