Default Tips for leaving bare areas

Any tips for leaving bare areas? I've got some valve covers I want to play with, leaving the high parts bare so they can be polished. I tried practicing on some other things but the results weren't that great. I want the finished product to look something like this.

Two ways, you can either use a high temp tape made for masking. Mask off the areas you need, powder the item and put it in the oven. Just when the powder starts to flow (about 1 minute seems to work for me) remove the item from the oven and take off the masking, return it to the oven for full cure.
The other method is to use the cheap foam paint brushes. Get the brush damp (not wet) and use it to remove powder. A damp finger will also work.

The Damp brush method works rather well. Here's my latest using the damp foam brush

Ya I did the covers with a Damp foam brush You have to keep wiping the powder off the brush. I would dip the brush in water, then wring it out on a cloth. Then, every 2 swipes or so, I wipe the powder off the brush, into said cloth. Keeps it from clumping and falling onto the work

Now do you take the ground off the part while you do this or leave it on?
