Default Powder coating a handgun?

I had a request to powder coat a hand gun. Haven't looked or asked what it is yet. I'm not really ready to do those right now. Maybe in a couple weeks.

My question is how to prep them for powder coating.
Do I just need to prep as normal, clean, polish etc.. or will some finishes such as blueing cause any problems with adhesion?

I am guessing Nickle plated I would treat like chrome? Could I do a Lolly right over the Nickle?
If painted I would need to strip paint?
If blued is that same as plain steel, or need removed? I'm guessing treat it as plain steel.

If I do the first one for him whatever it is, he has many more guns and I expect he'll want a few others done later if he likes the first one. Also his family is in law enforcement so if the first turns out good who knows, I may do some 9MM later also.

Just my opinion... But, I'd never powder coat a firearm unless it's a dedicated wall hanger.
Unless you know the alloy your working with and how the curing will effect it...could be setting yourself up for some major liability. Even at that, working on law enforcement weapons would be dicey.. gun jambs, misfires or whatever..... just isn't worth it.

I did a batch of 10 9mm guns for the police department

i would advise to anyone NOT to do it, and not for jams or misfires
a good powder coated gun works great
how ever if you get cought altering a gun with no licence it's jail time ,no questions asked.

for the batch i did i had to do them at the precence of the police and an arms dealer to take them apart and assemble after finish.

for reaserch porpuses only and not for anyone to try
blueing comes out with light blasting , you can't blast rails where the barrel moves and you can't powder them to prevent jams , powder on the barrel where the bullet comes out it a HUGE NO so you have to tape it out too and same goes for the safety hole

for the grip frame you have to tape out the triger area and holes

"altering a gun with no licence it's jail time"

Thanks for the info, and the above part I would not have thought of.
I know you don't saw off a shotgun or bore out a 22 to a 38 LOL, but myself I would never have thought something like painting or chroming a firearm would count as altering it. Laws are stupid enough though that it probably counts. I will look into that before I do any.
