best info i found said it's a thermoplastic base coat partially cured, with a thermoset top coat "selectively removed". sounds like there are different ways of removal including patterned screens or the faux finish paint technique of balled up seran wrap. something else that came up was dye sublimation. basically, you print a design or graphic on some type of transfer paper with a special ink, shoot the base coat, heat it a bit, apply the transfer paper, remove the paper, and the ink transfers into the gelled powder, then the part is cured. that's the extent of what i've got so far (mostly based on the thread harleydad linked... thanks! good info!).
