Default Powder coating questions

Hello all. I am new to powder coating and have a few questions. I make alot of parts from steel and want to powder coat them. What to I need to do to them, such as prep and pre heating them. Like I said I am new and not sure what to do. Thanks in advance.

Pete

Just clean and sand or glassbeed it and coat it. you don't need to preheat steel less it was a motor part that had oil on it and you mite need to pre heat that to burn out the oil so it don't come out while it's powded. stuff like an oil pan.

Alot of your prep will be determined by the condition of the material, it's intended use and the environment it will reside in. Got more info?

Like warchild said, blast with whatever you wish to remove the mill scale, although you don't want to much of a blast profile. No reason to outgas. If these parts are going to be subject to road salt and such or your in a coastal (salt air) locale you may want to consider a primer before top coat. Iron phosphating is also an option.

The parts that I make are for hotrods so they will only be driven in the summer. And I also make some garden art and the air is not salty. Is the primer necessary. Sorry about all of the questions I just want to be sure I am not missing something. Thanks in advance.

Any TGIC polyester (in the color of your choice) would be fine. Be sure the powder you chose is UV stable. Most manufacturers will tell you if a powder is uv stable or needs a clear. As far as primer, not necessary in your case. A good degrease, clean, blast, etc......... should be fine.

Thanks for the info. What do you think about the gun. And one other thing as far as degreasing, my steel is all new hr steel. Should I use acetone to clean or just use gloves after sandblasting.

Thanks
Pete
