Question What beads should I use?

Let me start off by saying after I sandblast I'm going to polish NOT PC. I always hear people talking about using glass beads, aluminum oxid, etc. I always just use white sand from a local hardwear store and it's ALOT cheaper. Does glass beads, aluminum oxid etc cut faster? why do people pay so much for it, does it work better? Wich one(The proper sand that you guys use) would leave the most smooth finish and still work fast.
Thanks

I belive Glass beads work the best, But it depends what you are stripping. I have had some coatings that the glass beads would not cut. Then I use a 180 grit aluminum oxide but there is a little more sanding and polishing. Todd

Doing this will give you Silicosis - a deadly disease. STOP doing it, and never do it again.

I agree with Cas,
Here's some info, but do stay away from play sand. Your health ain't worth the savings!

Warning: Abrasive blasting with sand containing crystalline silica can cause serious or fatal respiratory disease. Exposure to crystalline silica may cause silicosis (a serious lung disease), cancer and death. Exposure to aluminum oxide (a dust generated from material removing processes) can result in eye, skin and breathing irritation. Always use a NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) approved respirator and safety goggles. Avoid skin exposure. Proper ventilation in the work area is required. Read and understand the 10 recommended measures below to reduce crystalline silica exposures in the workplace and prevent silicosis and silicosis related deaths.

When I sand blast I always wear a full head cover and a breath respirator.

I hope so. But as far as media to use I use Black Magnum (coal slag), You would ant to get a fine cut if your only going to polish. Hope this helps.

I use silicone carbide. It's expensive but it lasts forever, cuts great, and there's minimal dust. It's about $90.00 for 50# from McMaster Carr.

That's why the best protection you can get is a supplied air system that will pump in air under a hood or mask and eliminate any chance of breathing in any of that junk.I am soon to get one and must say i will be using it everytime i sandblast, even if i am outside.
