I keep getting runs in my parts...I don't know what to do anymore. If I apply to little powder, then there is not enough coverage. If I apply too much powder, Then the powder runs...I can't win. I think it may be the powder I got from my powdercoater...I never had this problem with the eastwood powder that came in there kit.

what kind of powder are you using. i don t think the kind of powder would be responsible for runs , are you spraying the parts hot or cold

oven could be too hot when the parts first go in. that happens sometimes with candies.

I got the powder from my powdercoater...I think he uses tiger drylac. I apply it when the parts are hot or cold, doesn't make that big of a difference. I think I am going to try applying the powder to the parts when they are cold, placing them in a cold oven, and then slowly creep up on the temperature until the part flows out and reaches temp. Maybe I can do two coats instead of one coat to prevent runs...no? I have the oven at 375, which are the specs on the powder.

yeah sounds like you're applying it too thick.

I use Tiger powder often. I do notice that it flows more so than other powders (like Morton) that we use. I can't say that i've ever experienced "runs" or even drips or stalactites unless i was spraying the part hot and getting carried away. The temperature that you're using sounds correct, however most Tiger materials that we use specify 392 for 10 minutes. Try the two coat method, i don't know that it will work...Both coats will not floww into each other for a smooth finish and you will have to address the faraday effect with one of them.
On another note: I've found that hot spraying at an elevated temperature helps. I preheat for hot spray at about 500 to 550 degrees (using the same powders that recommend 392 or 400). The elevated temperature forces the stages of the cure to happen faster and the powder goes through the flow stage without as much of a chance to run or drip. You can achieve a much thicker coating without worrying about all the drips, runs, or orange-peel that would occur with a cold spray. |
