Default Powder not sticking

Hello to everyone.

I have a small hobby gun. It is a Redline model. It works very good most of the time for what it is. The problem that I started to have this weekend is that my powder will not stick to the parts at all. I thought that maybe it was a ground so I checked it out and the ground is fine. When I step on the pedal the light on the control box comes on like normal. I tried to get a "static discharge" at the ground from the tip of the gun but not dice.

I got out my multimeter and did a voltage check from the ground to the tip electrode while pushing the pedal and I get about 180 volts This seems like way too much for a 110v system. Since I don't know for sure what the output voltage is supposed to be (no good instruction manual) I am not sure if the transformer inside of the unit is a "step down" or a step up" transformer. Does anyone know what the voltage should be reading at the tip? Or have come across this problem before?

Thanks in advance for any help and input.

Not sure about the redline but... it should be at least 14000 volts DC and you can't check it with a meter like that... ruin and meter and maybe the power supply
IMHO

The Redline system that I have looks like a cross between the low dollar Caswell gun and the Chicago Electric system.

i'd say the problem is it's a redline.

i'm sorry. i hate people who poo-poo other people's equipment. we had a bad experience with redline, though, so i had to pull a punch.

Thanks for the replies. I have been looking for the last few days trying to decide which new "hobby gun" to purchase. I was thinking of purchasing the EW 1100 but the reviews that I have seen on the forums lead me to believe that the success rate of this gun is about 50% on multiple coats.

I can't complain too much about the little Red Line Neptune. I have been using it for over two years now with no problems up till now. Since I only paid $99 for it........it was a good investment for what it was.

I think that I will be calling Caswell today and order the 50kv unit. I just hope that it works well and is not a 31 day throw away gun. I go to Vegas quite a bit.............but I'm not much for gambling.

i expect you'll be happy with a caswell unit. we started with two of them and did hundreds of parts before they expired. and we were fairly abusive to them. check out the threads about making a couple simple modifications to the gun to get more even powder flow.

I have been reading around the forum and did come across that posting. But I won't be making any of those mods to the internals just yet. (warranty reasons)

I have seen a couple of posts about the gun "halves" (front barrel) coming apart and that a nice slip fit might be the ticket. I think that I have a piece of 2" round UHMW in the shop that I just may chuck up in the lathe and turn a new nose half for the gun.

We shall see what happens this weekend with the new gun. I call Jason this morning and placed an order for a new 50kv and six spare cups to help out with powder change overs. I think while I am waiting on the system to show up, I might as well put together a nice cart with a gun cradle on it to make life a little easier too.
