Whichever you choose, find a clear close to the gloss level of black your using. You may want to shoot a test panel first to see which you like better.

and when you add a clear on top of the flat black "basecoat" do you use the technique described in your first reply?
Is it OK to just leave the flat black coat without a clear or does it compromise the durability too much?

Just apply the clear as a second coat after curing the first coat. You don't have to clear it, although clear does add some durability.

OK, thank you very much for your help. If you have a gallery with some work you've done on Harleys, I'd appreciate it if you could post a link.
Thanks

Thanks for your input, maybe I'll try that first before I strip the whole thing. If it doesn't work, I'll restart from scratch.
Would you say I should just maybe sand the edges where the PC meets the raw aluminum to "blend" them and go for a second coat from there?

I just finished sanding the edges, I'm going to try a touch up first, see if I can get away with it. If it doesn't work, I'll strip the whole thing and start over (tomorrow).
