and when you add a clear on top of the flat black "basecoat" do you use the technique described in your first reply?
Is it OK to just leave the flat black coat without a clear or does it compromise the durability too much?
Just apply the clear as a second coat after curing the first coat. You don't have to clear it, although clear does add some durability.

I used high temp black on a snowmobile exhaust and put two coats on it and had no problem.. i didnt sand it or anything..
A year later and that customer is still working with me and had no complaints..
