Default Spray booth space

Hello all

Tried a search and didn't exactly find what I was looking for, but may have missed it. So many threads and so many titles, I couldn't look through everything of course.

As I stated in my oven thread, I'm looking to get into the PC game as a side hobby. The parts I do are all pretty small, nothing larger than 1-1.5 feet in any measurement - but I will be doing a few dozen a month.

Is any particular open air space required for a spray booth? My work area will be pretty tight so I need to think ahead. I've seen some spray booths that looked like a plain sheet-metal or wooden cube with the bottom/front open and that was that. Is something of that nature all I'd need? Would it be fine to do the work in a small garage/work shed? Would closed area pose any problems with the powder flying around all over the place or does it hit the ground quick and simply wait for cleanup?

Anything else about spraying that a *major* noob needs to know in regards to what is needed for work space/environment, I'd love to hear it so I can plan ahead

I built my booth 3x3x6 and I use a shelf for the sort items and remove it for the larger ones. I also have a set of folding walls for bigger items and pull the powder out with a paint booth fan. There are a few idea's here that pretty well take care of that. Just build it for what you want to powder coat and then make it bigger. Just in case.

Don't over buy powder, get it when you need it. Clean real good, put in a ground rod and run you gun and parts rack w/parts hanging to it. Do a search for "Spray Booth".

Keep reading here, search and practice, practice, practice.

Thanks for the tips. I plan to make it a bit bigger than I expect to require, for sure. While spraying, does the powder linger in the air or does it drop into the booth for easy cleanup? If it has a tendency to float through the air then I'm going to have to plan a completely separate spraying area than where I'm expecting to put it so it doesn't make everything filthy. If it just drops and I can blow it out, then that's much nicer!

Without an exhaust fan of some sort, it will float in the air and get on EVERYTHING. Including your lungs. Wear a mask, but do get a fan with filters or vent it outside.

A mask would be a definite. I do metal polishing now as it is and have a variety of different styles. I'll look into fans to see what I can find, try to figure how to incorporate it into my intended setup Thanks!

Check out my booth. This might give you some ideas.

My powder coating booth

I also added an extra little lip/gate to the bottom/front of it to help keep the powder inside. It's still working great for me and is easy to clean up with just a squeegy (sp?) to collect any large amounts of powder, and then a damp wash cloth to wipe everything down.

I saw some Spray booth wall coating on ebay (for those just following along) that is peelable. It's washable too, and brite white. Use it till you think it's too dirty and peel it opff and spray another coat. The old stuff peels off in one big sheet like tack paper or something according to the listing. Does this sound like a desirable item for powder booths?

That's a very nice looking booth. My kinda style

Does the fan blow powder all over the place, or are those filters that good as to catch it all being drawn through?

Thanks for the picture!

Thanks for the responses, I've got an understanding now of how to go about it and what is needed for a setup.

I'm not going to be needing it for a few months at the earliest, but maybe since the winter = no fun w/the car hobby I will build a little booth ahead of time
