    Default help choosing/question(s)

Plating Kits Electroplating Kits Aluminum Anodizing Kits Powder Coating Systems Metal Polishing And Buffing Supplies - Caswell Inc.

    (special on front page)

I have been wanting to get a PC system (forever)..

although I dont have any stove/oven for now.. Im looking at the PC system listed on the home page (special)

my question is about this part: 30-50KV

as I dont know much about this by any means.. does this mean doing smaller pieces will be hard to do? as this is too much voltage?

I want to be able to do smaller pieces.. 1.5 O.D. pieces varying in lengths of 1in.-8in... as well as bigger stuff like rims, frames, heads/jugs

will this allow me to do smaller pieces as well as larger pieces? upon searching.. I thought I had read larger 'V' makes it harder to do smaller objects?

(off to search about clear coating a once PC'd piece with color)

    Thanks for any replies..

In my opinion the 50 kv is the better of the two guns, Cas has to offer. It allows you to be more selective in the kv range. I don't think it will make to much difference in the part size. The thing about it is when you do second coats (clear coat) you turn down the kv's instead of up to do your second coat. It takes time and errors to learn what to do and not to do, beside asking questions. None of which are dumb. We've all been there when we started.

It's practice, practice practice and learn form your mistakes and those of others. Visit the forum regularly and read everything you can and it may save you some headaches, but not all the headaches.

    For your consideration though......

Higher KV means harder to get into tight inner corners due to an effect called the Farraday Effect. The shape of the part sets up a farraday cage that will not allow the charged powder to go into that area,.... it's like the force fields in space flicks.... the force is certainly with the KV's in those tight spots. This should be a consideration when shooting frames and boxes and anything with tight spots, such as Alternator cases, and things like amplifier heatsinks (Those are a living hell). You sometimes have to shoot items while they're hot to get the powder to stick, with no voltage charge applied..... A process technique called hot-flocking. (do a search on Hot flocking and on Farraday effect, or Farraday cage effect)

I believe that's an awesome deal for a first gun. You have lots more info to start PC'ing than I did. I started dumb as a brick and didn't even know the forum existed....... Just for fun. Learning stuff through the forums is far and away, a better idea. Good luck and once again, welcome to the wonderful world of powdercoating.

If money is tight, don't lose sleep if you have to go with the HF non-adjustable gun. The adjustment would be nice, but if you learn how the gun likes to be used, it's capable of doing some very nice work. I'm very happy with mine, it's done everything I've asked of it so far. I'm no pro, and don't plan to be one. So as long as I can coat the occasional part, it will serve me just fine.

funny... because I was 'going' to grab the HF gun/system... but when I started to read around (and found this forum actually)...

I was reading you dont the know to VOlts on it..and it can be probelamatic.. (didnt really mention why...but also made 'refeence' about to high of V is not good for small parts...but I could have been reading it all wrong)..

Whiel I dont dont plan on being a 'pro' of any kind...I am a hobbyist is all walks of life..

I weld a little.. I learned to bodywork/prime/paint all the sheet metal on my Harley..

I do other 'crazy' hobby's to keep my hands busy too.. and learning to PC would enhace alot of the stuff I liek to do..

I dont see myself spending more on a system than what Im looking at now...

and the HF gun was my first choice.. (as I have one right up the road from me)..

but I also dont want any problems... I would think a bike frame would be the biggest item I would ever imagine myself doing...

(and thats doubtful, as I dont have an oven big enough to bake it in) LOL

maybe some harley rims? (they fit in a conventional oven by chance?) ha ha..

Im very excited to start.. and cant wait to play..

anything else you got.. is appreciated..thanks
