    Default orange peel on wheels

my friend just powdercoated my wheels, and now they have an orange peel finish, can i wet sand them down with like 1200 grit to flatten out the finish then polish them with wax to bring the shine back up?

i wet sand up to 800, use 3m rubbing compound (which i've been told is 800 grit, so sanding to 1000+ would be going backwards) on a wool polishing pad, then 3m perfect-it II polishing glaze on a firm foam pad, then 3m perfect-it II again on a soft foam pad. gave me good results and is pretty fast.
