i am a newbie to powdercoating. i just finished coating a set of aluminum valve covers for my own car. i used gloss black and they turned out excellent. i showed them to a few people who asked me if i would coat some of their car parts ... i don't have a clue on how to price this stuff out. is there some sort of pricing formula? tia, ron turch

Yes. i glass bead them and powder coat them for $50. if i had to buff it for like a clear coat to go on it then the price will go up. my first pair of valve covers i ever did i had to buff it to a chrome look and powder a red in the middle of them then put a clear coat on it for $50. ill never do it agin for just $50. anymore. that buffing is to much work for me. but if there is no buffing in it then i think it's a good price. it only takes me 30min to blast it and powder a pair. not counting the bake time. and no dents to fix.

I guess if they were already cleaned and dent free, you would just have to rough them up a little and not spend much time blasting. My oven isn't very big, so only one (Hemi) valve cover will fit at one time. Takes longer that way, but I could get two normal V8 valve covers in there at the same time so it would be quicker. People are starting to ask me to powder coat stuff for them too.

my valve covers were real clean( steamed them) and i wiped them down with solvent. i did not scuff them at all. they are cast aluminum. will i have a problem with the coating staying on them in time? as far as the finished product, i feel they couldn't have turned out any better. perfect flow out.
p.s. the covers are off my 87 turbo-t regal (6 cyl.) so both of them fit real easy in my oven. |
