and Veined. Look the same to me![]()

I've been searching around recently, looking for the difference between the two. And frankly, I really can't tell. Some call it veined, some call it hammertone. I'm just trying to distinguish the difference. Does one hold up better than another? Does one flow out more evenly/smoother? Are they even the same two colors being blended? Here is a picture of what someone calls "hammertone", and another what the guy calls "veined". Two different people so who really knows...
Hammertone.

I've never shot hammertone just silver vein. That pic looks like silver vein when you shoot it hot. If you shoot vein cold it comes out much darker than that and more pronounced veining. Not sure how you shot that hammertone though.
I did the legs of this tattoo cart with Black Frost, which is yet another term used...I think there is even "shredded" in some color names.
This was Black Frost from NIC Ind.
Hmmm I see. I'll just buy 2oz of each and have to mess around.

Well I bought some vein, and I think I must have been shipped the wrong powder? It will not VEIN at all. I've tried everything. Thickness, temperature, pre-heating, de-gassing, grounds, distance when spraying, everything. It always comes out with a silver coat, and little black pits here and there. No veining at all. It doesn't even look as good as that wheel up top either. So I dunno what's going on...
How long did you cure it? Remember the cure time and temp is after the part gets to that temp (pmt), not the oven.
Who says you can't teach an ole dog new tricks?
Cure times varied. I was only doing small parts of angle iron, all the same size. Some I threw right in at 375 for 18 minutes, others I let warm up until it was glossy and then did 15 minutes. I did a few at 250 for 10 minutes, then 15 at 400. I played around with it a LOT, and just couldn't get a nice finish. Not even close.
As JT mentioned the cure time does not start until the part reaches cure temp, not the oven. The way I read your post, all are undercured. Are you checking part metal temp with an I.R. temp gun. The hammertones and veins do not do their thing until at the end of the cure cycle. Be sure to apply enough powder.
