Default Masking tips and techniques wanted??

Im looking for some tips and tricks on masking. It is a long slow process and im looking to speed it up. Does anyone have any tips /tricks or ideas? Also materials you are using to mask? I just did a set of rims flat black with a red lip but spent almost 1 hr per wheel masking and the first time i took it off it ruined the red underneath it.

I'm interested in this as well, since I will be doing a few rims soon (first time) but through trial and error and reading up on older posts, I've found that using tin foil and tape greatly speeds up the process, sometimes you'll need to remove your masking during flowout depending on the part and finish your trying to achieve.

Masking is a very tedious process, when I paint it takes at least twice the lenght of time to mask something as it does to shoot the paint. It's just something that experience teaches you in speedup process.

Masking tip of all masking tips..... If you are shooting a piece that is completely coated already, you can wrap the part you will not be shooting a subsequent coat on, with Aluminum foil, and hang that part on the hook. This will allow the rest of the part to accept the charged powder.... weird stuff.

I did this recently , and there was a small farraday area at the edge of the foil. I used no tape at the transition,.... so I just grabbed the foil with my hand and without the gun shooting,..... I watched as the existing, already there powder, walked across the cage area, and fill in..... Really cool to see.

But the point is, this may be the way to get that part completely and totally covered with no hook marks or pin hols from needles and stuff. Just mask using foil, to an area that will not show the transition, and shoot some more powder and cure.....

I coated this hook,... Hanging it by the handle, with 2 coats KL Killer primer. Then I was having a hard time figuring out how to get rid of the hanging mark, without it looking like poo, so I wrapped the Hook end up a little past half way, with Foil, then hung the hook by the crook just upside down, on a clean hook. I didn't even use any tape, probably should have,... But this worked super well, for coating the handle with the Hog black. I think it would work well for items that need no marks, if you had a transition area you could mask to, then coat the same color also, of course removing the foil once flow out occurs. Here's a picture of the hook.... It's about 10 inches long or so.... I added the red tip using Liquid to Powder and an acid brush.

Havent done it before but I wonder why you couldnt use one of those white out tape rollers as long as the rim had a lip you could follow it with that

I've only done a few wheels,... nothing schmancy. Masking the line around, as I understand it, is done with the high temp blue tape (or whatever you use) Width of tape will depend on what your desired stripe width is. One of the guys, here or on another forum, puts down tape then uses an adjustable scribe to cut the line perfectly from the edge of the rim. I could not find the photo of his contraption he built.... looked around for a while last night with no luck. Basically a staff with a knife on one end, and a stop on the other.

The white out tape roller is a kind of idea too. Maybe we can get one of the tape manufacturers to offer one up that's not too expensive.
