  • Does anodizing too long cause problems?

I am trying to get a hard durable anodizing coat so I tried anodizing for about 1 hr 40 min. It does appear that I got a nice thick hard coat using the 2:1 water/acid concentration but the dying didn't turn out very well. My part has blotchy and streaky (and even mesh-type) areas that appear shiney when held under direct light.

The only difference here from previous parts was the length of time in the anodizing tank. I used about 1 hr 10 minutes for my other parts.

By anodizing for too long , you can actually strip off what anodize you put on.

We hope to have an update on this procedure, with some exiting new ideas shortly.

Caswell is waiting on me guys, I'm the dummy who volunteered to do this. I'm now running some properly controlled experiments to be sure my numbers are right, We are certain that the theory is right, based on my results and a number of others who have tried this technique. Don't let the word "theory" scare you, the anodizing method to be introduced is is both easy to do and sure fire. If this is released too early and has some wrong numbers, it will only create more confusion. Please be patient.

Well fibergeek. I can't wait because some of the parts I plan on doing are going to be a real b**** to figure out surface area on.

If you have an awkward sized part, try covering it with paper. Remove the paper and lay it out in a rectangle, then calculate the area of the rectangle. It'll give you a close enough estimate.
