I am removing anodise with phosphoric acid (for reasons I wont go into I cannot use lye, caustic soda)
the anodize removal works fine but it leaves the surface of the aluminium with a smut or greyish colour
is there a readily available agent I can use as a desmut

So, you won't tell us the reasons for using phosphoric acid. Are you keeping valuable secrets from us? Must we invoke the Freedom of Information Act to learn this important information?
I have been using a lye solution as a stripper. Although it works, it can't help but dull the finish or if used too long, pit the surface. Does phosphoric acid attack the aluminum? I could use a cheap alternative to lye.

Phosphoric acid is commonly found in a rust treatment chemical farmers have been using for years to treat their cattle trailers.
