How do you use the CL-650 Chiller?

Hi,

I purchased the Anodizing kit last year and with summer coming I'm getting tired of using the ice cube method to cool my acid. So, I went to Caswells site and saw they sell a chiller unit, the CL-650.

My question is, how do you plumb it into my anodizing solution? Does anyone have any pictures of how to make this happen? I would like to get this ordered and working as soon as possible so any feedback would be great.

I couldn't find and have not seen the chiller your talking about. The chiller I am waiting on and all the ones I checked into required a pump to circulate the electrolyte through the chiller unit. Right now I am only running a magnetic drive acid pump for agitation in my tank. You can look in my album to see how I have mine plumbed. When my chiller gets here I will have to re plumb. Where the output of the pump goes up and into the tank I will have to cut and reroute through the chiller unit.

Your setup is very cool, thanks for directing me to the pictures. If I'm looking at the pictures correctly, it looks like there is a drain at the bottom of your tank that feeds the inlet of the pump. Then, the outlet of the pump goes through the pvc pipe back into the tank and is dispersed through small holes in the pvc. Is that correct?

I would be interested in purchasing the pump that you have, can you direct me to where you purchased it? Also, do you worry about the acid eating the pvc pipe and causing leaks? I would hate to have 20 gallons of acid all over my garage floor .

Thanks for the link. I looked all over and never could find it. It's about the same size unit I ordered.

The tank is a $20 utility sink from HD made of HDPE. It's approx. 21" square, 12" deep, 20 gallon. You have the plumbing right. The 2 pipes running out of the fluid on top are used to feed the pipes on opposite sides and suspend the setup in the middle of the tank. I think Little giant has a CRC (chemical resistance chart) on the site that you can download in PDF. It rates how common materials used are effected in different chemicals. If you can't find it, I can email you a copy I got from them. PVC handles the acid with no problem


Little Giant pumps - look at the magnetic drive pumps, they have 3 grades of pumps for corrosives (MC, CS and HC) I use the 3-MD-HC on mine. A little over-kill with the HC for a 5% acid but I felt better safe than sorry. Best thing is agitation without the mist from aeration. It also cools the parts better with the extra flow.

I once was going to go this route as well. The main things I didnt like was adding a bulkhead to my tank and the idea of something starting to leak and the pressure of the pump spraying acid everywhere. I have a totally different approach to the cooling situation but havnt gotten a chance to give it a shot yet.

The smallest chiller I found was a 1/4 HP. The pump I am running on my 20 gal is a 3-MD-HC. It flows 720 GPH and does real well.
