  • Chrome plating alumilite

My brother is recovering a Datsun 1200 for racing and asked me to help him restoring the tail light chromes. Because they were broken, I made a mold and used Alumilite for casting it.
To give the chrome aspect I tried several kinds of paints with no success. Then I found Caswell and see that there is other solutions to chroming.
So, all this to make a "simple" question, is it possible to use the Caswell products to chrome plastic parts made of Alumilite? If so, what is the best solution?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Re: Chrome plating alumilite

Yes it is possible, although not the easiest thing for beginners to do.

If you want a REAL chrome plate, you'd need a triple chrome kit. http://www.caswellplating.com/triple.htm

Otherwise, you can use Copy Chrome, http://www.caswellplating.com/copychrome.htm or Electroless Krome, http://www.caswellplating.com/electroless_krome.htm. If you go this route, you'll also need a copper plating kit. http://www.caswellplating.com/copper.htm

Now the hard part....you need to make these parts conductive somehow to plate them. So you need some Conductive Paint. http://www.caswellplating.com/csp24.htm

    The (somewhat simplified) steps are:

    1. Conductive Paint
    2. Copper Plate
    3. Buff
    4. Nickel, Copy Chrome or Elec Krome
    5. Real Chrome if desired.

      Re: Chrome plating alumilite

I finally received the "Electroless Krome! Plating Kit", "Copper Plating Kit 1" and the "Copper Powder" ( picture in http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/4545/plating.jpg ) but it looks something is missing. Am I right?
About the plating process, where do I start? "The Complete Manual" has all types of plating and I don't know which I have to use and where to start. Any advices?
      Thanks.

Don't know why but if I copy+past the link into browser address, it works but clicking of the link, in the forum text, it doesn't
