Is an a/c power supply viable, or is d/c necessary?

The use of Alternating Current (AC) will not work for any electroplating or for anodizing.
This is because in AC the negative part of the cycle effectively reverses the anode and cathode connections. While AC will plate on the positive half of the cycle, it unplates on the negative half. You wind up with nothing.

perfect answer and dont skimp by on buying a battery charger or something similar either.

the plating soultion is your heart and the power supply is the brain of the set up

        ac?

its been my experience that ac and water dont mix... EVER! that would make a direct short and with ac a direct short... in my experience has always been associated with some sort of quick and loud pop.
