  • Remove chrome plating from plastic

How can I remove chrome plating from automotive plastic parts??
Will Muratic acid or acetic acid eat away the plastic I need something safe to use on the underlying part.

    Thanks for the help.

Re: Remove chrome plating from plastic

You can very carefully reverse plate the chrome off, using an acid pickle. You should be able to remove the chrome layer down to the nickel underneath without harming the plastic.

It\'s unlikely that a bit of acid on the plastic will harm it anyway....after all the acid probably came in a plastic container, right?

You can also buff it off.

Where can one purchase or make this \"acid pickle\"??
When the chrome is removed what can be done to remove the nickel that is left on? Buff it off from there maybe?
      thanks

There\'s a formula in our plating manual. http://www.caswellplating.com/complete.htm It\'s mostly battery acid.

If you want to remove the nickel also, there is another pickle you can use, or you can buff it off.
