  • Newbie question about copper plating cabinet hinges

I want to plate some kitchen cabinet hinges and have a bright copper finish. What do I need? What products will work the best? These hinges are small, will the plug n plate work? I plan on a polyurethane or clearcoat to keep it shiny. Feasable?

I have never used a plug-plate system. You will need some way of stripping off the old finish off, whether that be varnish or chrome? You will need a strong cleaner and degreaser prior to plating. I assume the hinges are in good cosmetic shape, if not, they will have to be sanded and buffed proir to plating. I don't know if plug-plate has brighteners in the solution (ask Caswell), if not you will need sisal/emory, spiral/brown and maybe loose/white to get the shine you want. Varnish or clear coat should work fine in a indoor invironment, test first to see if it affects the finished look.

could a bright finish be put on the hinges and maintained/protected by clear coat?

PNP Copper is Flash Copper, so it will go on directly. However, it may be streaky due to the brushing action. You can LIGHTLY polish it to remove this and improve the shine.
Our Clear Lacquer VHT will work well over this.

                thanks!

thats just what i needed to know. The streaking shouldnt be too noticeable because of the small size of the hinges anyway.
