for nickle plating, what would give the thickest layer, and what would be the better system to use, for plating jewelers mini lathe parts that were previously nickle plated (in 1930s), electroplating or electroless system?

Both systems plate at the rate of 1/1000" per hour.

I think the advantage of electroless is that, for small parts, it plates all the surfaces evenly. It is slightly more expensive, but only nickels and dimes.

I'd plate for about 15 - 20 mins on most parts, giving you 3/10000"
This should give you good corrosion resistance, without altering tolerances etc.
