  • Newbie!

I plan on doing some golf iron refinishing. I am leaning toards the copy chrome kit. But I have some questions. I am currently working on one head. I have taken the chrome off with muratic acid and have sanded and used cutting compounds (black/white) and the head looks good, but I haven't got all the little nicks/chatter out. Do I need to sand harder, use more cutting compound. Would a vibratory get rid of them? Will the copy chrome level them out?

What would be the next step. I believe I need to activate (sulfric) the nickel before using the copy chrome. Is this correct. I want to get as much info as possible before I pull the trigger on the kit. Thanks in advance for any help.

You will have to sand them out and you will most likely sand thru the nickel and into the base metal that might be an alloy that could be difficult to plate. The safest way would be to plate with acid copper, sand, acid copper, sand, acid copper then buff to a mirror finish, then copy chrome. You will have to activate the nickel first, 15 seconds in 5% sulfuric should work. If you are going to play with the club, I wouldn't worry about tiny imperfections, just activate and copy chrome it.

Thanks for the info. If I wanted to use copper would the flash copper be the way to go. I can pick up a kit of flash copper and copy chrome. I can't find anything on the site about acid copper. Thanks again for the help.

Technically you could us flash copper, it will just take a lot longer. Acid copper will fill, level, sand and buff easier than flash copper, it is softer. Here's a link

Thanks I think I have got it. I am going to get the copy chrome and see if they can't make it a combo with a copper kit like the flash copper. I think I have finally seen the light. Thanks for you help.
