plugging a hole before plating

can someone tell me what to use to clean the metal prior to plating in the electrolees nickel kit i need to use something i can buy local at the hardware store or auto parts i also need to know what to block the barrel on a old pistol to keep it from plating and my screw holes PLEASE HELP !!!

You can purchase muriatic acid for pickling your part, described in the manual. This acid is normally stocked by Home Depot. After you clean the part with acid, deactivate it in water+baking soda solution. For general degreasing Acetone works really well. To plug the holes, you can use the cork, cone shaped cork is sold by fastener stores in various sizes, they might also have vynil caps and plugs, they'll work too.
