  • polishing ali tubes

Hi all, i need some advice on polishing fork tubes prior to anodising.
currently i use my lathe, and start removing the scum produced by stripping the anodise with fine wire wool, then 400, 600 1200 wet and dry, then use a proprietary aluminium polish on a soft cloth. i get a nice deep lustre, but get swirl marks in the direction of rotation.
what would be a better method ?
i have a 2hp bench buffer, BTH i really dislike using it, especially on long stuff. but if needs must etc.

    TIA

are they marks left by your sanding process or from the last aluminium polish and cloth. if they are from the sanding then you should try a cutting compound before the aluminium polish, if they are from the polish then you should try a different combination of polish and or different cloth, youi could also try a swirl mark remover like the pros are using when polishing car paint.if nothing else then you could find a 7 inch variable speed polisher/ sander and use as a buffer with the proper compound and wheel on the tube while they are spinning in the lathe

possibly a combination of both, i took them and sanded with 2000 grit longways and hit the buffing wheel with a little blue compound and they came out like glass

I have machined up a plate to fit on cross slide to bolt a bench grinder to and use auto feed, but havent got round to fitting it yet, i use the lath for machining more than polishing so its a PITA re-setting everything up, maybe i should get another one the wife'll go mad LOL
