Polishing my tanks on tractor trailer and no matter what pad or compound I'm leaving marks from the pad? Please help

What kind of marks? Photos are needed to see what is happening. And a complete description of your process.

You say pad. Are you using a buffing wheel or a fleece pad?

Is the pad really clean? Grit is the source of most scratches and marks.
