    Victor,

Start your sanding with some 220 grit working up to about 600 grit. I wet sand it cuts the aluminum faster. The first sanding should be in one direction, when you switch grits you should sand at least at a 45 degrees angle from your original sanding. Make sure that you sand out all the scratches from the previous sanding.

When you finish sanding with the 600 grit try buffing a spot to see if it will buff out and shine without leaving any scratches. If it does then your in, if not go to 1000 grit and try again etc. I guess what I'm trying to say is it is a trial and error type situation. It all depends on the type of aluminum.

What grit are you using? Have you sanded all the blemishes out that you wanted to?
There's no method to know when to switch to the next grit or when to start buffing. It all comes from experience gained mostly from trial and error. If you start buffing to soon , you'll have shiny scratches. Then you'll need to back up a step or maybe go one more grit finer. You just have to stick with it until you get the look you want. After awhile you will be able to know what you need to do by looking at a part. SS
