I have an old NCR brass cash register that I had the nickel removed and now would like to polish the brass. The edges will be mirror polished but the interior design should be highlight polished. What can I use to get into the design and clean/polish it?

I would try using HARD felt buffs. They should be hard enough to stay out of the area that you don't want buffed. Dremel buff would be ideal. Try starting with tripoli.

that would be a good final step put first I need something that will get down into the design to clean it. The nickel was removed with a chemical bath and I need to get the color correct before I do a final polish.

Perhaps a very soft blasting media used at a very low pressure....? Or even a water blast with controlled pressure?

It?s hard to tell from the picture, but the area around the design is dimpled making it even harder to clean. I had an old very soft wire brush and it seem to do a pretty good jib of cleaning the area but now it looks like a copper finish. I?ll try to run a cotton wheel over it tomorrow to see what that will do.

You first bet should be to smather the brass part in tomato ketchup and leave it there for 10-20 minutes. Rinse it off and most of the crud will be removed, then you can gently polish the part with a loose &/or spiral cotton wheel, and brown compound
