what is the best way to polish s.s. sheets that are to big to hold on my buffing motor? i have a 2 hp balder and many caswell products such as wheels and compounds! i da the surface from 80 grit to 400 grit then from 600 grit to 1200 grit wet, then move to the emery, green, and white! but the piece is to big to hold by hand! can the polishing be done with an automotive buffer with a wool bonnet for each compound? your help and advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks M.F.

Re: polishing s.s. sheet
sswee,
thank you very much for the input to my question, but i have one more question for you! can you use the wheel on the 4 1/2 " grinder like a normal wheel or should you use the edge of the wheel as you would on a buffer, and if you have to use the edge of the wheel, can you gang them up to have wider surface contact?
thanks, your input is appreciated! M.F.Last edited by mirrorfinish; 02-02-2006, 01:12 PM.

Re: polishing s.s. sheet
in answer to that question i have one of those adapters on my 4.5" grinder. you still use the edge, and yes you can stack themwhen in doubt polish it out/ why replace it when you can refinish it

Re: polishing s.s. sheet
...I haven't used a 4.5" grinder yet, as it does seem a little fast for my taste (not saying it doesnt work)...I use the DW849 @3000 RPM with some good ol' fashion elbow grease, and patience!

Re: polishing s.s. sheet
Choice of tool should vary with the size of the job and form. The RPM of a tool is only one of several considerations.
It's all about your FPM.
5,000 RPM , 8" wheel = 10,471 FPM
3,400 RPM, 10" wheel = 8,901 FPM
10,000 RPM, 4" wheel = 10,471 FPM
