    Re: polshing stainless

welcome to the forum first off. not doubting you on this but what leads you to think it has a coating on it? some stainless alloys have been passivated to help the outer shell be more corrosion resistant this can create a skin if you will on the outer face of the metal. this may be what you have. if that is the case then just sand it down and start to polish like any other piece of metal. if it has a clear coating on it like some powder coat or paint then it should be stripped with aircraft stripper. then polish as normal. hope this helps bro.
when in doubt polish it out/ why replace it when you can refinish it

when i sanded it, it looks a gray color with shiny stainless underneath, with just trying to buff it you dont get any black coming off the piece thanks

sounds like it may have been clear coated. i would try the aircraft stripper unless someone with lots of stainless experience hasseen this before and knows different.
